Message From the Head

Microbiology has proliferated into an exciting discipline of science in last few decades. Its activity is included but not limited to Pharmaceuticals Food and beverage, Environment, Medical and Clinical sectors as well as other aspects. All of these aspects are affected with discoveries of Microbiology. At this era, Microbiology is becoming the answer to many of plaguing questions of human race, including sustainable bioenergy, production of various chemicals, enzymes, vaccine development against various plaguing diseases as well as dealing with emerging threats of antibiotic resistant superbugs.

The Department of Microbiology offers a four-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) [B.Sc. (Hons.)] program in Microbiology at the undergraduate level. This program extends for 12 semesters and comprises a total of 149 credits. We also offer 1 year Master of Science(MS) program in Microbiology comprises a total of 36 credits, with a view to producing highly skilled capable graduates in application-oriented microbiology. The courses are shaped to suit the present-day demands of microbiology in the areas of public health and sanitation, biotechnology, biochemistry, genetic engineering, microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, medical microbiology, diagnostics, immunology, and quality control assessment of food products and pharmaceuticals. The departmental curriculum has been designed in such a way as to meet the requirements of various national and international research and educational organizations, and industries. First and second year students are also required to take 12 credits of general courses including English, Management and Computer Science to enhance their chances of competing globally and to broaden their bases of knowledge. Minor courses including Biochemistry and Human Physiology will give students exposure to related fields in microbiology. Laboratory work is continuously assessed throughout the semesters, and oral assessments are also taken.

It is said that 21st century is the century of Microbiology. Recent estimate is that we need about 50000 skilled Microbiologists in our country to meet the need of Pharmaceutical & Biotechnological industries. To prepare those skilled Microbiologists, Department of Microbiology offers both B.Sc and M.Sc program. A 4-year B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences/Biomedical Sciences and Medical graduates are required as an entry qualification for students intending to study for MS degree. The Department will provide all laboratory facilities to the students and students could visit to other research laboratories like ICDDRB, BIRDEM, BCSIR, IPH, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Square Hospital, Apollo Hospital, France, USA, and Japan for carrying out their research works.
